EdgarMay Stingrays team comes on strong in first swim meet

The EdgarMay Stingrays kicked off its 2016 summer swim season with a meet on Tuesday, June 28 in Bennington against the Bennington Marauders and the Brattleboro Swim Team. The Stingrays had a  strong first showing with many of the swimmers posting personal best times right out of the gate. In his first season coaching the Stingrays, Christian Avard had the team primed and ready for a fast start.

Forrester Avard of Putney  Dummerston was the top swimmer for the Stingrays earning 77 points with three 1st Place finishes and one 2nd place showing in the four individual events he entered.

Haley Racicot of Ludlow had four personal best times in the 50-free, 50-back, 50-breast and the 50-fly, earning 23 points on the night. Two new members of Stingrays — Rowan Caulkins, 9, and Lacey Perry, 7 — were competing in their first ever swim meet and both performed very well. Rowan earned 57 points and Lacey, the team’s youngest swimmer, placed in both the 25-free and the 25-back, earning 28 points for the team.

Chester native Noah Jones earned 71 points with one 1st Place finish and three 2nd Place finishes. Janie Thompson of Springfield posted a personal best in the 50-freestyle, dropping 1.6 seconds off her time. Another Springfield native, Ari Cioffi, dropped nearly nine seconds off of her time to take 1st Place in the 200-freestyle in the 11/12 age group. Ally Lantz, from Charlestown, N.H., posted personal bests in the 25-back while taking 3rd Place.

The girls 15-19 Relay Team placed first in both the medley relay and the freestyle relay. The team is made up of Grace Johnson (15), Alyssa Ferris (13), Lily Jones (13) and Ari Cioffi (11) and finished the medley relay in 2:22.98 and the freestyle relay in 2:00.

In the end, the Stingrays had 37 individual entries, in 25 of those 37 entries a Stingray placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd place.

The Stingrays youth swim team is a program of the Edgar May Health and Recreation Center. The team is open to those ages 6 to 19 and practices three or four days per week. For more information about the team call 802-885-2568 or visit www.myreccenter.org
