To the editor: GM Food Services providing healthy meals

The Green Mountain Union High School’s Food and Nutritional Services is well into the new school year and everything is going great. It is always good to see the kids back. All of our staff from last year have returned including Josh Adams our sous chef, Karla Hunsdon our sandwich prep and server and kitchen assistant Steve Pippin.

Letters to the editor logoWe offer a great breakfast and lunch daily. Breakfast begins at 7 a.m. and ends around 8 a.m. We have expanded our lunch offerings  in an effort to increase student participation. A good breakfast and lunch are vital to learning. At lunch we offer daily no less than eight choices including our hot meal of the day. There is a huge variety of cold sandwiches, pizza, hoagies, even low-sodium all-beef franks. So there are always items available the kids will eat.

We also offer our fresh fruit and vegetable bar every day with every meal. We purchase much of our fruits and vegetables from Windham Farm and Food, a local distributor of local organic fruits and vegetables from farmers right in our own back yard. We deal with local vendors as much as we can.

We encourage everyone to apply for free and reduced meals. You may think you do not qualify but to be sure everyone should apply. There is a great deal of federal funding for our school that hinges on our free and reduced numbers. By filling out the application you are helping our community with school funding. You may just qualify for reduced, if so the state picks up that cost as well.

Our point-of-sale program allows parents to add money to their child’s account. Simply go to mymealtime.com and set up your profile. We have many parents taking advantage of this service and it is working well. You can also pay by check or cash on the accounts. We do not allow charging so try to keep the account current. Make checks payable to GMUHS Food Services.

We invite any local senior citizens to our monthly luncheon. The first Wednesday of the month we have a great lunch served at noon, so join us.
