Fifteen students from Green Mountain Union High School have been named to the National Honor Society, Flamstead Chapter, announced Ally Oswald, NHS adviser and GMUHS guidance counselor.
The 91-year-old National Honor Society, with chapters in all 50 states, honors students who have “demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Character,” according to its website.
The honor is open to all sophomores and juniors with a cumulative grade point average of 4.0. Those students are asked to apply by filling out an application for that includes letters of recommendation and a resume. A team of five teachers from GMUHS makes the final decision, Oswald said, adding, “I’ve only been doing this for two years and we’ve never turned anyone down.
“These are good kids, solid kids, active in their churches, in their Boy and Girl Scout troops” and in other activities.
She said one benefit of being in the honor society is that it “is definitely recognized on their college applications.”
Oswald said members meet on a weekly basis, and “do events throughout the year.” Some of their activities include a bottle drive to “recycle and collect money (and) tutoring for middle school kids.” They also been working at the elementary school and intend to volunteer at the Grateful Garden, helping with planting, she said, adding that members have also been discussing participating in the Relay for Life in Springfield.
Current Flamstead members of the National Honor Society are: seniors Mark Harwood, president; Alexandra DeRosia, vice president; McKala Benson, secretary; Melanie Thompson, treasurer; Lily Calabrese; Cydy Palang and Ramsey Peters; and juniors Emily Guerra; Katie McNally; Jessica Ralston and Carter Wilhelm.
An Induction Ceremony will be held for the students and their families at the school on the evening of May 2.
