Three Green Mountain Union 7th graders have been recognized by the office of the Vermont Secretary of State for essays they have written on the rights and responsibilities of voters.

Secretary of State Jim Condos honored the winners of the 2012 Vermont Secretary of State’s Poster and Essay Contest today, Tuesday, May 22nd at the State House in Montpelier.

“It was very difficult to select winners from the many fine essays and creative posters we received,” Secretary Condos said in a press release. “This program is a great way to get younger students thinking about their state and its history, while encouraging older students to examine the nature of self governance and its importance in a free society.”

The three Chester residents, whose social studies teacher is Ashley Carafiello, all received honorable mentions in their category. They are Maci Prescott, Tommy Knockenhauer and Molly Verespy. You can read their essays by clicking on their names. Molly and Tommy’s presentations will download, and Maci’s will appear in a new window.
