Police Log for April 14 through July 26, 2013

Editor’s Note: The Chester Telegraph Police Log is a sampling of incidents directly from Chester Police reports. We do not identify individual victims of crimes nor those who have been arrested.

Sunday, April 14, 11:14 a.m.

Police pulled a driver over on Elm Street after running a check and finding that his license was under suspension. The man’s young son was in the car with him and police told him that they would allow someone of the driver’s choosing to pick up the son before taking the driver into custody. The driver’s mother arrived, and took the vehicle and her grandson. The man was then taken into custody and charged with criminal driving with a license suspended.

Sunday, May 5, 4 p.m.

Chester officers arrested a man on four active arrest warrants near Main Street downtown.

Saturday, May 25, 9:04 a.m.

A resident off Popple Dungeon Road called to report that while having his garden roto-tilled the previous day, they discovered a bronze burial plaque and would like police to take it. However, upon failing to discover its origins, the plaque was returned to the resident.

Saturday, June 1, 1:48 p.m.

An officer responded to a burglar alarm at a home north of the Pinnacle. At the scene, an officer found a side door open, but the chain and lock were set. The officer continued to search the exterior, but found no sign of entry

Sunday, June 9, 10:15 a.m.

A male in a pickup truck was pulled over after he drove along Depot Street and past police, who ran a check on the vehicle. Police discovered that the vehicle was registered to someone with a suspended license. The man said he knew why he was pulled over but taking flowers to his sister’s funeral, which was to take place at 2 p.m. that day. Due to the situation, police asked the man to have his family pick up the vehicle instead of impounding it. The man was taken to the Rockingham barracks for processing, then released to his family.

Saturday, June 22, 12:14 a.m.

Police were sent to the 600 block of Depot Street with a report of an outdoor party with fire and participants shooting a potato gun. Upon arrival, police saw that the participants had disappeared. There were no lights on in any of the area apartments. Police did find the potato gun and ammo. He disposed of both.

Tuesday, June 25, 5:59 p.m.

Complainant said that sometime after noon, someone entered his residence and stole 105 Oxycodone and 126 methodone pills from the kitchen. Police found no sign of forced entry or that the lock had been slipped, and no sign that pills had been taken.

Thursday, June 27, 7:27 p.m.

This is the second visit by this Chester officer to this address along Route 103, where neighbors are accusing each other of name-calling, animal trespass, unlawful trespass, petty theft and more. But police are unable to prove that any complaint from either side violates a criminal statute. This time, the complainant was upset that the Chester officer answered the complaint instead of the state trooper that the other party calls. Police say that each side is making claims that can’t be corroborated. Once again, the Chester officer advised both parties to “stay out of each other’s airspace and be civil.” He also advised them not to take down the yellow tape dividing the properties.

Friday, June 28, 10:28 a.m.

An anonymous complaint that  a vehicle was being driven erratically on Depot Street, and someone was tossing beer bottles out of the windows. The vehicle was stopped, no beer bottles were found and the operator of the vehicle had not been drinking.

Monday, July 1, 5:12 p.m.

Two men at the ball fields off Route 103 South were having a verbal fight over the use of a truck that is owned by one of them. The owner took the truck and left and police noticed the odor of intoxicants on the other man’s breath. His parole and probation officer was notified.

10:45 p.m.

People were around the pool on Lovers Lane after dark. They had been talking and no issue was found with the pool or the buildings.

Tuesday, July 2, 11:23 a.m.

A resident off the Green reported that someone had stolen the inspection sticker off her vehicle on June 27. On July 2nd she had seen the sticker on a car parked nearby.  On July 10, police contacted the suspect, who claimed that the sticker came on a vehicle he had purchased. After being confronted with the lie, he said a friend gave it to him, but would not name the friend. When he was told that he would then be arrested for theft, he gave the name and said the friend sold it to him for $20 or $25.

Thursday, July 4, 3:21 a.m.

Police received a report of a vehicle off the road at Smokeshire and Route 103 with the intoxicated driver walking from the scene. State police and Chester police both responded, but neither saw the pedestrian. And it appeared that the car was stuck on the dirt berm. There was evidence of alcohol use in and around the vehicle, and a purse was recovered for safekeeping. The vehicle was towed and police went to owner’s residence but no one would answer the door although noises were heard inside the home. The following day, the owner of the purse called. She said she had loaned the vehicle to a friend, and that is how it became abandoned.

7:31 p.m.

Someone requested that a “rabid” raccoon along VT Route 10 be put down. Animal was dead upon police officer’s arrival.

Friday, July 5, 10:25 p.m.

Someone complained of illegal fireworks along Popple Dungeon Road.

Saturday, July 6, 7:45 a.m.

Someone complained about a dog loose along Putnam Hill Road. The loose dog was found. It had no collar and there were no reports of a missing dog. The dog was taken to Rockingham Vets and a message was left on the answering machine of the possible owner.

Sunday, July 7, 9:44 a.m.

Police received a report of a maroon minivan registered in New York being driven erratically on Route 103, south of Route 10. Police found the van, followed and stopped it but did not find any violations.

Wednesday, July 10, 12:22 p.m.

A resident came into the Police Department to report receiving a fraud letter. The letter, which was addressed to her, said that she was the 2nd prize winner in a consumer promotion sweepstakes. Enclosed was what appeared to be a check for $1,900. The resident called a telephone number in the letter, and spoke with a woman who told her to deposit the check into her account, then go to Western Union and pay the processing fee of $1,600. The letter stated that once this was done, she would receive the balance of $250,000. The resident, however, had suspected that this was indeed a scam, went to a local bank and spoke with someone who verified that it was a scam. The resident wanted the police to know just in case others received the scam letter.

Wednesday, July 17, 2:07 p.m.

A truck driver along Green Mountain Turnpike said he was traveling south when a Jeep came around the corner in the middle of the road. The truck driver pulled to the right as far as possible but felt the trailer slide on the bank and begin to head downhill. The truck then came to a stop but again started to slide, then rolled onto its right side against some trees. The lawn mower on the trailer rolled off and landed on its side.

Thursday, July 18, 6:17 a.m.

A driver said he fell asleep along Route 10 while driving to work. He said he started to go off the right side of the road, over-corrected, spun around and went off the left side and into tall grass. No damage to the vehicle.

Tuesday, July 23, 10:16 a.m.

A resident in the Flamstead area called police to say that she had found a puppy but that no neighbors owned it. The dog was described as female, about 5 months old, wearing a flea collar. It is “black with white socks, slim but healthy, not too bright, but sits when told … very sweet.” The resident is told to take the puppy to Rockingham Vets.

12:24 p.m.

A resident along Pleasant Street reported that her daughter, upon returning home around noon, found a brown paper bag on fire with dog poo inside it. Residents saw nothing. But this is the third such incident in the area.

Thursday, July 25, 2:13 p.m.

A Depot Street resident report that someone had lit on fire a bag of animal poo at 1:30 p.m.

Friday, July 26, 2:15 p.m.

A Ludlow resident called Chester Police to report that he hit a deer along Route 10 and when he went to check on the deer, it had run off into the woods. The Ludlowean stated that since he had no major damage — no where near $3,000 that requires DMV notification — and had no cell coverage to report the accident, he returned home. Damage was to the front of the vehicle. Deer fur was spotted.
