Chester Police responded to a report of an assault in progress in the Depot Street area last night around 10 p.m. According to Chief Richard Cloud, speaking with the Telegraph this morning, the report was received by dispatchers who remained on the line with the caller. Treating the report as a potential hostage situation, Chester Police went to the address that had been reported and cleared the residence, finding there was no crime in progress there.

Depot Street was closed during the incident and Route 103 traffic was directed around the area via Green Mountain Turnpike and Pleasant Street (Route 11.) The Springfield Police Department assisted with the road closures. The FBI and Vermont State Police assisted with call tracing. There have been reports of a helicopter involved with the incident, but Chief Cloud said that no helicopter was used.

Cloud noted that the public was not in danger during the incident and that Chester Police are continuing to investigate what appears to have been a false report.

Yet the street was blocked off, traffic rerouted, police support from neighboring towns as well as the state police and the FBI were called in? I think we have a problem here.
