Motorcyclist injured in early morning crash

A 48-year-old Cavendish motorcyclist was injured in a 7 a.m. accident involving a Volvo driven by a Ludlow resident at Routes 103 and 131 in Cavendish, Vermont State Police said this afternoon.
According to police, the Volvo was traveling south on Route 103, with the driver intending to turn left onto Route 131. At the same time, David Neenan was riding his 1998 Harley Davidson motorcycle north on Route 103, approaching the Route 131 intersection.

Police say that due to the fog, the Volvo driver did not see the motorcycle approaching when he began his left-hand turn onto Route 131. However, when he did spot the motorcycle, the Volvo driver braked, then veered right to avoid a collision. Neenan told police that when he saw the Volvo turning onto Route 131, he braked, veered left and laid his motorcycle down on its left side to attempt to avoid the collision.

The rear of the motorcycle hit the right front bumper of the Volvo, temporarily trapping the Neenan beneath the car until he could be extricated by emergency personnel. Neenan was transported to Springfield Hospital by Ludlow Ambulance, where he was found to have multiple torso fractures and a dislocation fracture of his right ankle. He was later transferred to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Hanover, N.H. for more advanced treatment. Police say the investigation is continuing.
