Historic info, funds sought as Hearse House work continues

The Chester Townscape is seeking contributions of information and dollars to restore the historic Hearse House at Brookside Cemetery and open it to the public for tours.

Early support of the Chester Townscape project enabled the Town of Chester to contract with a carpenter for woodwork, foundation, roof and site work that set the stage for repainting of the Hearse House as well as the addition of electricity and internal structures that will convert the building into an educational attraction in the heart of Chester. That work is expected to be started and completed in the spring of next year.

Thus far, Chester Townscape has raised $31,600, and is seeking another $20,000 to go toward the completed educational project.

Hearse House volunteers are in the process of researching photos, memories, memorabilia and information about the building, which was built in the 1830s and renovated around 1907.  Donations of funds and information are being sought.

Tax-deductible financial contributions can be made to the Chester Community Alliance Inc., a 501 (c)(3) charitable. Checks should be made out to Chester Community Alliance  Inc., marked for the Hearse House, and sent to P.O. Box 561, Chester, VT 05143.
