A 17-year-old  Claremont, N.H., driver lost control of his vehicle on Route 121 in Grafton last night, flipped over the Saxtons River Bridge and ended up in the river.

According to Vermont State Police, Irfan Arif was traveling west on Route 121 at about 8:20 p.m. when the passenger side tires of his yellow Hummer H2 left the roadway.

The Hummer then went across into the opposite lane as it entered the Saxtons River Bridge and struck a guard rail. Police report that scuff marks on the bridge’s guardrail show that the vehicle spun out of control and then went over the railing, dropping about 15 feet into the river below before landing on its roof.

Irfan and two juvenile passengers managed to get out of the Hummer, which was partially submerged, and climb up to the roadway, where a passing motorist stopped for them.

Police report they received medical treatment for injuries. But no further information was available from the State Police.
