GM hoopster Cooper McCoy hits 1,000 points

Green Mountain Union High School’s Cooper McCoy passed the 1,000 point mark playing against Twin Valley on last Tuesday night.

The 5-foot-8 inch point guard scored his milestone on a free throw as his parents — Jodie Parker Peebles and Brett McCoy and 30 friends and relatives  — looked on.

All had made the 50-mile trip south to Whitingham to witness Cooper’s feat.

The celebrating was to begin when Cooper — with 998 points — was fouled with a little more than a minute left in the game. According to Peebles, her son’s first free throw went straight in, “but the second one rolled around the rim and looked like it was coming out  — and then it dropped.”

After the second shot, the game was halted while McCoy was recognized for his achievement.

Scoring 1,000 points in a four year career is a high plateau for a high school player. Only 10 Green Mountain cagers have reached it since 1966.

McCoy started playing basketball in first grade at Chester Andover Elementary according to Peebles. “He got serious about it in third grade,” said Peebles. “He would ride his bike to the rec field or the elementary school and just shoot baskets by himself. He dedicated a lot of time to it.”

While McCoy scored his 1000th point at an away game, Green Mountain plans to recognize McCoy at its Saturday Feb. 6 home game against Poultney.
