Editor’s Note: The Vermont State Police incident report is a sampling of incidents directly from Vermont State Police. We do not identify individual victims of crimes nor those who have been arrested.
Monday, Jan. 4, Londonderry – Vermont State Police received a report of a burglary on Landgrove Road in Londonderry. The caretaker of a seasonal cabin told police that he discovered it had been broken into. According to police, the door of the cabin was kicked in but it appeared that nothing had been stolen. It appears that the break-in took place between Dec. 30 and Jan. 4. The case remains under investigation.
Monday, Jan. 4, Landgrove – Vermont State Police investigated a second burglary on Landgrove Road, this time in Landgrove. The caretaker of a second home told police that the burglary happened between Dec. 30 and Jan. 4. It was unclear whether any property had been taken and the case is under investigation.
Thursday, Jan. 7, Peru – Vermont State Police received a burglar alarm from a residence but did not respond because the alarm was not registered with them. Subsequently, police received alarms from the same residence on Jan. 17 and twice on Jan. 19.
Monday, Jan. 11, Londonderry – A Londonderry resident reported that her credit card had been used in a fraudulent online purchase and that her credit card company had canceled the card. The amount of the purchase was $48.
Wednesday, Jan. 13, Londonderry – Magic Mountain reported that a company Apple I-Pad had been stolen from the base lodge office.
Saturday, Jan. 16, Proctorsville – Police responded to a report that someone was stealing electricity from a residence. Upon investigation, they found that a landlord who claimed that a tenant was $3,500 behind on rent, was plugging into the tenant’s power to run the well pump. The trooper advised the landlord to file through civil court if he wanted to have the tenant evicted. No charges were made.
Sunday, Jan. 17, Peru – Police received a report that someone had kicked in the door of a garage on Rock Bottom Road and that a pair of snow shoes valued at $130 was missing.
Monday, Jan. 18, Peru – A Peru business called state police to report a case of embezzlement. Police reported that checks for approximately $8,000 had been written on the company’s account. On investigation, police identified and arrested a suspect charging her with forgery and citing her into court on March 14.
Tuesday, Jan. 19, Grafton – A resident reported that someone had used a debit card fraudulently six times at the Irving station in Dummerston for a total of $4,265.
Tuesday, Jan. 26, Peru – A complainant told troopers that there had been an unauthorized ATM withdrawal from his bank account. The man said he ordered a card through his bank but never received it in the mail. He later learned there had been a withdrawal amounting to about $735 that was took place at a teller machine in Pembroke Pines, Fla. He has since been reimbursed by his bank.
Thursday, Jan. 28, Peru — A trooper responded to a report of a suspicious van near a residence on Hapgood Pond Road. The trooper checked out the surrounding area and did not find the van. Checking the house, the trooper found it to be secure.
Thursday, Jan. 28, Londonderry – Vermont State Police responded to a call that a woman who was sitting in her truck outside a house on Thompsonburg Road. According to the woman, she and a man in the house had argued and that he had her keys. Dispatchers noted that there had been problems at the address in the past. According to police, the man and the woman had argued after he canceled her auto insurance, for which he was paying. By the time troopers arrived, the woman was gone and she has not contacted VSP to follow up.
Friday, Jan. 29, Rockingham – Police received a report of mail being stolen from a mailbox in the Brockway Mills area. This is part of a domestic dispute.
Sunday, Jan. 31, Rockingham – State Police recovered a stolen truck at the Rockingham Transport Park on Route 103. The truck was reported to Charlestown, N.H., Police as stolen from a company in that town on Jan. 28. The owner had lost touch with the driver who had been ill. Upon investigation, police cited the driver with possession of stolen property.
Excessive Speed: Defined in Vermont statutes as driving more than 30 mph over the speed limit, this charge is becoming common on Vermonts roads. The charge is punishable by a fine of up to $300 and/or three months in jail for a first offense and up to $500 and/or six months in jail for a second. Here is a sampling of arrests for excessive speed in January.
- On Jan. 5, a 22-year-old Rockville Center, N.Y., man was clocked at 103 mph on I-91 in Westminster.
- On Jan. 5, a 22-year-old Monroe, N.H., man was clocked at 97 mph on I-91 in Rockingham.
- On Jan. 14, a 20-year-old Bryn Mawr, Pa., man was clocked at 106 mph on I-91 in Westminster.
- On Jan. 30, a 30-year-old Rego Park, N.Y., man was clocked at 103 mph on I-91 in Rockingham.
