With the clock ticking up toward a 2 p.m. closing time yesterday, employees at the Jiffy Mart at Main and Depot streets in Chester were telling each customer that the store would be locking its doors for good shortly, but the new store at Main and Pleasant streets would be open on Wednesday at 5 a.m.In reality, the new Jiffy Mart was already open, testing its ability to handle the lunch rush by giving away free Subway sandwiches and Ramunto’s pizza.
Meanwhile, back on Depot Street, employees pulled out displays and other items to take over to the new store and at 2 p.m. Michelle Page locked the front doors. Asked what would keep her awake the night before the opening, Jiffy Mart district leader Joni Goss joked “Everything,” but then said she felt the new store was in good shape for the opening.
Champlain Oil President Tony Cairns has said that the gasoline tanks and canopy will be removed from the Depot Street location and that building will be put up for sale.

The new Jiffy Mart is booming. If a business ever filled a need it can be seen right here in Chester. I do believe better placement could have been made, not from a business perspective but from a town plan perspective. I miss the stately home on the corner.
We are not going back, I get it, but I personally would have loved to see the large vacant restaurant up the street torn down or re-purposed or the new store more appropriately placed out by the car wash.
In a lot of ways I’m sure others find the location very good. Home renovation and preservation is costly, the Records were able to capitalize on a sale and the store is still in walking distance for many of our residents. The company has done a very nice job with the store and the landscaping. I have to say the black fenced monument is odd I would have preferred some efforts to recreate it in a more stable fashion.
When bigger players come to town it would be nice if we could get a bit more back. We are lining the Jiffy Mart’s pockets very nicely and will continue to do so for years to come. I predict a new player in fuel out on the edge of town at some point until then the Jiffy will be raking in the dough.
Unlike a certain dollar store, the New Jiffy Mart is a positive for Chester. Much better than the hard to access old location. Glad to see it attracting traffic.
I’m fine with the new J-Mart, but I’ll still go to Lisai’s for sandwiches and good beers.
