Police Log for May 2 to June 1, 2014

Editor’s Note: The Chester Telegraph Police Log is a sampling of incidents directly from Chester Police reports. We do not identify individual victims of crimes nor those who have been arrested.

Friday, May 2, 7:29 p.m.

A Chester officer responded to a Springfield address to serve a Vermont Civil Violation Complaint on a subject for an illegal burn at a property in Chester.  The officer was unable to locate the subject and the VCVC  was sent by mail.

Monday, May 12, 8:23 a.m.

A resident on Main Street reported that 70 pieces of slate were taken off his porch between Saturday,  May 10 and Monday, May 12.

               11:07 a.m.

Responding to a one car accident on Route 10, a Chester officer noted long skid marks indicating that the 2003 Acura registered in New Hampshire was traveling at a high rate of speed. The car hit a telephone pole (that had been) converted to a mailbox, and was totaled.  According to witnesses, the car was speeding and passing cars along with two other vehicles. After the accident, a black Volkswagen also from New Hampshire arrived and several boxes and bags were transferred from the Acura before police arrived. Witnesses also said that a female was in the car at the time of the accident, but she was not present when police arrived.  The cause of the accident was speeding and aggressive and negligent operation.

Wednesday, May 21, 9:40 p.m.

Police responded to the report of a car being driven erratically. When they contacted the owner, he reported that he had just replaced a tie rod and the car needed alignment. His mother — who had been riding with him — confirmed “his vehicle had issues maintaining its lane.” The car’s owner said he would have an alignment the next day.

Thursday, May 22, 3:18 p.m.

A Chester officer responded to a complaint of trespassing in a development off Route 103 only to find that the complainant was the landlord, claiming that she did not know the people living in the house.  After discussions, it seems that the landlord had moved all of the belongings of the tenant’s family out of the house and refused to give them back. The belongings included medicine needed by the family’s children.  Upon investigation, it was found that the landlord did know who was living in the house. The landlord – a New Hampshire resident – was served a citation to appear to answer charges of burglary and grand larceny.

Sunday, May 25, 10:31 p.m.

An officer responded to the report of a car parked  for a long time off Route 11 East. The officer found a man — dressed in a Department of Corrections uniform — sleeping in the car.  Upon being awakened, the man explained that he had an eight-hour period between shifts and it was too far to go home and come back, so he found a place to catch some sleep. He had two hours left and was not a hazard to traffic so the officer let the subject go back to sleep.

Friday, May 30, 10:30 a.m.

A resident called to report that when she arrived home after shopping at the Jiffy Mart on Friday, May 23, she noticed that the passenger side window would not go up or down. She then found that the mirror had been broken and pushed in against the window glass. She explained that she had parked in front of the building and had not noticed the damage.  She called on the 30th for a report.

Saturday, May 31, 7:09 p.m.

Two officers were dispatched to the Church Street area for a report of two pug dogs — one black, one white —  running around at large. Nobody on the scene was able to get their hands on the dogs, but when police arrived the dogs disappeared into the woods.

Sunday, June 1,  5:05 p.m.

A Chester officer responded to a call from a motorist in the Route 10 area. The motorist told police that he and his grandson had been tailgated by a red Ford Ranger with a matching cap. He reported that he was not going slow and that there had been areas where the truck could have passed him.  The truck driver, the motorist said, began operating erratically, then passed the motorist holding up an assault rifle and pointing it at him.  The motorist added that after passing them, the driver of the truck also held a pistol out the window and continued driving to Springfield.
