Orthopaedics is a broad-based medical and surgical specialty dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal system. These include pediatric orthopaedics, sports medicine, joint replacement and surgery for arthritis, foot and ankle surgery, hand surgery, shoulder and elbow surgery, spine surgery, trauma and fracture care, musculoskeletal oncology, rehabilitation and arthroscopic surgery.

Certification by the ABOS, an independent, private and voluntary nonprofit, means that the orthopaedic surgeon has met the its specific educational, evaluation and examination requirements.
Maintenance of certification is a 10-year process following initial certification that requires ongoing continuing medical education, undergoing a stringent peer review process to make certain that they are respected by their peers and practicing ethical orthopaedic surgery, and taking and passing a written or oral examination.

Kevin Dwyer, M.D., is a graduate of Tufts University School of Medicine and completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. Dwyer joined Springfield Hospital in 2013.
