Doris Gillman, 92, loving mother, dedicated volunteer, in service to others

Doris H. Gillman of Brunswick, Me., died peacefully at her home on Wednesday, June 8, 2016 with her son Herbert and her youngest daughter MaryAnn by her side.

Mrs. Gillman lived a full life for 92 ½ years. She graduated from Otterbein College and worked as a social worker in the 1950s. Mrs. Gillman and her family lived in Brunswick until 1963 when they relocated to Vermont.
In Chester, Mrs. Gillman, her husband Herb and their family of five children lived in a gabled home on the hill overlooking Chester Depot.
As she raised her children, Mrs. Gillman also worked as a substitute teacher and a bookkeeper as well as serving on the school board and the Board of Selectmen. After her retirement in 1987, Mrs. Gillman and her husband Herb returned to Brunswick.
Mrs. Gillman was a warm and generous soul and a volunteer for many noteworthy causes. She loved to read and do crossword puzzles and cryptograms to “keep her mind sharp.” She was a lifelong and avid bridge player.
Mrs. Gillman was the eldest daughter of Marion Elihu Hotchkiss and Louisa May Agnew. She is predeceased by her brother Donald Hotchkiss and sister Eleanor Frame.
Mrs. Gillman was the loving Mom to five children: Sally (John) Grubman; Patsy (Joe) Johnston; Herbert III; Steve (Mary); and MaryAnn (Jim) Hutchcraft. She was also the cherished grandmother to three grandchildren: Jeanna Bonello; Doria (Paul) Ferrante; and Drew (Zuliema) Gillman. And she was the special Great Grandma to five great grandchildren: Rocco; Mario; Dominic and Leo Ferrante and Bensen Gillman. She also leaves behind her “cousins by the dozens,” as she was fond of calling them.
A service is scheduled at the First Parish Church in Brunswick, Me., for 2 p.m. on Friday, June 17, 2016.

Your mom was a strong, smart and always helped others. She loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and always talked about them and how proud she was of all her family. She liked her sports, book club and playing bridge. She was my Aunt Doris..After the loss of mom, Steve said she can be my east coast mom. That she was. I am a better person for having her in my life. My prayers for the family.
