GM Varsity girls fall to Proctor; Middle school girls rout Leland & Gray

Girls Varsity Soccer: Proctor 5 Green Mountain 0

Monday, Sept. 17

Down 2-0 at the half the Lady Chiefs surrendered two goals in quick succession to begin the second half, with Proctor taking advantage of their opportunities. The Phantoms tacked on one more goal for the 5-0 win and sending GM off with an 0-3 start to the season.
“Despite the score, Emily Castillo played strong and aggressively in the net … including stopping several breakaways in the second half,” coach Julie Walton commented after the game, also noting Castillo’s 18 saves. In addition to Castillo, coach Walton remarked on strong games from sophomore Desiree Nestor and  junior Cheyenne Prescott.

Girls Middle School Soccer: Green Mountain 8 Leland & Gray 0

Monday, Sept. 17

The Middle School Lady Chiefs continued their strong start to the season going 2-0 while thrashing host Leland & Gray by a score of 8-0.
GM’s Hanna Veysey, Lexi White, Avery Prescott, Molly Verespy and Riley Karl all tallied for the Chieftains while ‘keeper Kassidy Cummings kept a clean sheet for the shutout with what coach Emily Lehet termed “an amazing performance.” Coach Lehet also mentioned Skylar White and Marin Pennell contributing to the defensive efforts.

Boys Middle School Soccer: Green Mountain 4 Leland & Gray 1

Monday, Sept. 17

The Chieftains put together a nearly complete game winning 4-1 over Leland and Gray. GM got all four goals from Mack Walton, including a nice one on one move eluding the Rebel’s goalie. Walton’s efforts were aided by the attention paid to fellow striker Jeremy Fleming drawing coverage in the offensive zone as well as Ben Haseltine feeding balls in to the center.

The defense was anchored by goalie Jon Little as well as solid contributions along the back line from Brian Anderson, Tuck Wunderle and Sean Kenney “preventing Leland & Gray from capitalizing on any ball past midfield,” according to coach Ashley Carafiello.

With a team that is well-conditioned and counts on each player playing multiple roles, Carafiello values their versatility saying, “It is important to have this flexibility. Through our practices, every player is responsible for learning and being able to play every position on the field.”

Even with a solid start to the season at 1-0-1, the Chiefs will take no opponent lightly. “I consider every game to be a ‘big’ game,” says their coach. “You just never know what is going to happen.”
