A persistent high fog finally broke after noon on Saturday, Sept. 22, to bring out the crowds to the Chester Rotary’s Fall Festival on the Green. It remained a beautiful weekend almost up to the end, when clouds rolled in to cast a similar chill Sunday afternoon that had dampened Saturday morning. Within the two days, the Chester Rotary sold out 40 large pots of various soups, from spicy Thai and Chinese to pumpkin, corn chowder s and chicken soups as well as meat and vegetarian chili.
Demonstrations took place throughout the weekend, giving shoppers insights into glass-blowing, which occurred at the Goldthwaite Road studio of Chester artist Nick Kekic, and book-binding and basket-making, thanks to Malcolm Summers of Chester Bookworm, who is also the Rotary president, and Jeffrey Gale, respectively. Summers said later that monies raised by the Rotary through booth and soup sales during the festival will go into its general fund “for our exchange students, for Interact (the student arm of Rotary), we donate money to community projects, scholarships. We’re giving away about $50,000 every year, most of it spent locally.”
