GM Boys trounce Bellows Falls 5-1

Varsity Boys GM 5, Bellows Falls 1

Monday, Sept. 24
The Green Mountain Chieftains defeated the Bellows Falls Terriers at home by a 5-1 score.
After two tough, back-to-back losses on Friday and Saturday and playing on only one day of rest, the Chiefs came out flat in the first half.
“I kind of expected a slow start after the games against Leland & Gray and Twin Valley (Friday and Saturday losses), but I got them tuned up at halftime and we finished strong,” said coach Scott Walker.
The sluggish start left the Chieftains trailing 1-0 until Jake Cavacas scored the equalizer. The game remained deadlocked 1-1 until halftime when the Chiefs got their “tuneup,” from Walker. In the second half, the Green Mountain boys unleashed four straight goals including Cavacas’ second, one from Chad Leonard and two from freshman Cooper McCoy. Meanwhile, the defense held the Terriers to only three second half shots, all handled by keeper Kyle Kemp, for the 5-1 final score.
The win raised the Chiefs’ record to 3-5 on the season and broke a scoring drought that had lasted the previous four games.

Chester Recreation Fall Foliage Tournament

Boys 5/6 Chester 3, Springfield 1

Monday, Sept. 24
Chester’s James Anderson opened the scoring, taking the ball from midfield past several Springfield defenders and put his shot in the upper left corner for a 1-0 Chester lead.
Midfielder Jonah Caum later initiated a fast break, ultimately sending forward Brooks Smith in for an open look as he outpaced the Springfield defense, and put away the shot for a 2-0 lead.
Springfield battled back with a goal of their own, but the Reds wouldn’t be denied, as Field Willis sealed the win with Chester’s final goal on a nice feed from midfielder Kam Cummings and a final score of 3-1.

Girls 5/6 Chester defeats Springfield

Monday, Sept. 24
Allowing only three shots on goal all game, the Chester girls defeated an overmatched Springfield team under a moonlit dusky sky in Monday’s nightcap of the Chester/Springfield Fall Foliage Tournament. “The girls had a great game of passing with strong shooting that resulted in a solid win,” said coach Anne Lamb in an understatement. It was a shutout from a lineup including: Zoe Svec, Laurel King, Piper Geisler, Annie Lamson, Rachel Guerra, Alexis Palmer, Erin Otis, Cece Pennell, Gwen Coger, Aeden Coger, Simone Martorano, and Erika Knockenhauer.

Tuesday, Sept. 25
The Lady Chiefs dropped their first game of the season, losing to Charlestown by a 3-1 score. Despite what coach Emily Lehet described as “a tremendous effort” from the midfield duo of Hanna Veysey and Sammy Chase, the Lady Chiefs couldn’t overcome a well-organized and well-coached team. Riley Karl had the Chiefs lone tally and, other than that, Lehet noted, “We had several opportunities but couldn’t finish any of them.” GM’s record was 3-1 after the loss.

MS Boys GM 5, Charlestown 3

Tuesday, Sept. 25
“Tuesday was the most perfect day for a soccer game,” GM coach Ashley Carafiello remarked.
Indeed, her team came out strong against Charlestown with three quick first-half strikes, and took a 3-1 lead into halftime. Charlestown responded with two goals to tie the game early in the second half but the Chiefs maintained their composure to score two more goals for the 5-3 final. With a goal from Jeremy Fleming and two apiece from Ben Haseltine and Mack Walton, coach Carafiello praised her team’s passing, “The game was a wonderful display of through balls and crosses.” The Chiefs record stood at 3-0-1 after the win.

Cross Country at Mill River

Tuesday Sept. 25
The GM cross country team competed on a 2-mile flat course at Mill River Union High School in Clarendon, against teams from Mount Anthony, Mill River, Mount St. Joseph, Fair Haven and Rutland.  Forrest Lisle was the top GM finisher, completing the course in 11:57, good for ninth place in a strong field.

MS Girls GM 0, Flood Brook 5

Thursday, Sept. 27
In spite of solid goal-tending from the tandem of Sierra Kehoe and Kassidy Cummings, the Lady Chiefs couldn’t stem the tide of onrushing Tigers as Flood Brook shut out Green Mountain 5-0. “Lexi White and Sara Ripley did an amazing job and put forth tremendous effort,” according to coach Emily Lehet but it wasn’t enough at either end. For the first time this season, the Lady Chiefs failed to get on the board, and several breakdowns led to too many opportunities that the Tigers gladly cashed in on. The loss left the Chiefs with a 3-2 record for the season to date.
“I think this week was a good learning experience for the girls,” said Lehet referring to the team’s first two losses of the season in the previous three days. “It showed them exactly what we need to improve on as a team. … (and) that, through it all, we have to stay together as a team. Even if we are losing we can’t let it fall apart.”

MS Boys GM 5, Flood Brook 0

Thursday, Sept. 27
The Chiefs reeled off their fourth consecutive win in fine fashion, blanking the Tigers from Flood Brook by a 5-0 score.
The game conditions may have transitioned from sunny and warm to an overcast chill as the sun set, but the Chieftains stayed consistent throughout, maintaining near constant possession and pressure on the beleaguered Tigers.
Brian Anderson got his first start in the nets for GM and rewarded his teammates and coach with a shutout win. Thanks to some strong defensive play from Ian Kehoe, Anderson wasn’t challenged for much of the game, though he made several good saves late to preserve the clean sheet.
Jeremy Fleming opened the scoring, followed by a goal from Ben Haseltine, then two from Mack Walton. Fleming finished the scoring with his second goal, running on to a nice through-ball from Walton and patiently slotted a low shot to the keepers right as he came in on goal alone.
The win raised the Chieftains record to 4-0-1.
