Girls varsity ends season winless, GM boys win cross country title

GM girls varsity 0, Twin Valley 3

Monday, Oct. 15
A young Chiefs team got some valuable experience in the 3-0 loss to Twin Valley as members of the JV team were called on to play. Having had an abbreviated season of their own with cancellations and rainouts (only two of the eight originally scheduled games were actually played) the JV group got some quality field time against Twin Valley.
The Lady Chieftains celebrated Senior Day with a halftime presentation of balloons and Gatorade for their seniors, Jessica Ralston and Emily Guerra, as well as Twin Valley’s seniors. Guerra and Ralston have been with Coach Julie Walton’s varsity team for three years including an impressive run to the Vermont State Division III finals in 2010 where they tied Stowe 0-0 through regulation and two overtimes, ultimately losing on penalty kicks 5-3.

GM middle school girls 1, Vilas 4

Monday, Oct. 15
The Lady Chiefs fell to Vilas, of Alstead, NH, on a wet day in Chester, splashing their way to a 4-1 loss. GM’s lone goal came from Sammy Chase. The loss leaves the Chiefs with a 5-3 record.

GM MS boys 10, Vilas 1

Monday, Oct. 15
Green Mountain improved to 8-0-1* on the season with a dominating 10-1 win at home against Vilas. The Chiefs got goals from Clint Goodman, Ethan Hart, and Ben Haseltine with one apiece, Ian Kehoe with three, and Mack Walton led all scorers with four goals.

Lisle’s 1st place finish gives GM boys the cross country title

Tuesday, Oct. 16
GM Cross Country traveled to Mount Saint Joseph Academy in Rutland for the MVL class “C” Championships on a 5k course and took home the boys title on the strength of Forrest Lisle’s first place finish.
The Green Mountain boys competed against 17 other runners from.
Forrest Lisle finished 1st in 20:08, Logan Mott was 5th with a time of 22:50, Noah DiStefano 7th in 23:51, Calvin Stowell 10th in 24:25, Kyle Cyr 15th in 28:39 and David Barrows 16th in 30:33.
Katie Haseltine finished 5th in the girls race with a time of 28:52, and Lydia Churchill finished 4th among middle school girls on a 1.5 mile course in 12:16.

GM boys varsity 5, Windsor 1

Tuesday, Oct. 16
The Chieftain offense hit its stride against the Windsor Yellowjackets winning by a 5-1 score at home. “We came out strong and our offense was really clicking,” GM coach Scott Walker stated. Sophomore striker Addison Provance had a hat trick, Junior Jake Cavacas had one goal and Freshman Cooper McCoy added another.

GM boys varsity 3, Black River 5

Wednesday, Oct. 17
The Chieftains took on Black River at home and the game seemed to represent a microcosm of the inexperienced Chiefs’ inconsistent season. GM came out flat and before they knew it were down by a 3-0 score. “No excuses, but it’s the reality of having a young team,” said GM Coach Scott Walker. “We lack discipline at times and we lose focus. It’s not for lack of effort, I know the guys are trying.” The effort finally paid off in the second half with three straight goals from Ricky Chambers, Jake Cavacas, and Addison Provance to tie the game 3-3. Then the inconsistency returned and the comeback fell short with GM losing by the 5-3 final score. The Chieftains finished the regular season with a 4-9 record.

GM MS boys 3, Charlestown 4

Wednesday, Oct. 17
The Chiefs looked a bit out of sorts all game and couldn’t overcome a barrage of three Charlestown goals in three minutes and a dubious handball call in the penalty area with minutes to go, ultimately losing by the 4-3 final.
GM opened the scoring with a first half Ben Haseltine goal after Mack Walton drove down the right wing and endline, sending the assist to Haseltine at the goal mouth for a tap in. Shortly after came the flurry from Charlestown as the Chieftains were exposed for two goals in a minute, struck back with one of their own, Haseltine’s second, only to have Charlestown get it right back; a total of four goals in about three minutes!
Down 3-2 at the half, Green Mountain persevered, tying the game on a Mack Walton goal off of a loose ball. Time was ticking down and Charlestown kept the pressure on with a cross in to the box from the right wing. A Charlestown player appeared to be off sides on the cross, but a handball was called on a GM defender, and the ensuing penalty kick was the go ahead game winner. The loss was the first of the season for the Chiefs, now with a record of 8-1-1*.

Wednesday, Oct. 17
With goals from Molly Verespy and Lexi White, Green Mountain played a great all round game according to GM coach Emily Lehet and left the Lady Chiefs with a 6-3 record.

GM girls varsity 0, Leland & Gray 3

Thursday, Oct. 18
Playing their season finale with a mix of JV and Varsity players the Lady Chieftains visited Townshend to take on the Rebels of Leland & Gray. As with the previous game against Twin Valley, GM Coach Julie Walton gave members of her JV squad some valuable experience and field time as the JV schedule had been abbreviated due to cancellations and rainouts. The offense was shut out and the Lady Chiefs lost by the 3-0 final, finishing the season without a win.

Thursday, Oct. 18
Green Mountain is 7-3 after this victory.

*League play does not include results from recent GM MS Tourney where the Chiefs had one win, one overtime loss on penalty kicks and two ties.
