To the editor: Why I am voting for VL Coffin

As Election Day approaches, I want to share why I’m voting to reelect Rep. VL Coffin (Windsor 2, Baltimore, Cavendish and Weathersfield).

I’ve known VL for several years, and what stands out is that his service doesn’t begin or end at the State House. I’ve seen him serve burgers and hot dogs at fishing derbies and community BBQs, entertain families at Trunk or Treat, cheer on runners at Lace Up for Laura, and make Christmas special for children at Kurn Hattin when a Santa was needed.

He’s also a decorated veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. I’ve stood beside him at our town’s Veterans ceremonies as we honored those who served – and those who never came home. When my son visited the Capitol, VL took time from his day to give him a personal tour of the State House. VL’s kindness toward children and families is remarkable.

But there’s another story that says even more about the man VL Coffin is. One evening, VL called my wife, Andrea, about a local resident who was getting back on his feet. He had found a job but wouldn’t receive his first paycheck for another week, and he was hungry.

Without hesitation, VL and Andrea gathered a week’s worth of food to help the man through. There was no publicity and no expectations. VL simply saw a neighbor in need and immediately acted to help. It’s a story he’s too humble to tell himself.

In Montpelier, VL stands for affordability, lower taxes, property rights, and our rural communities. He keeps neighbors informed, listens to people with differing views, and treats all with respect.
And Gov. Phil Scott has again endorsed VL’s reelection. I want a representative who will work with Gov. Scott to tackle Vermont’s affordability crisis, protect taxpayers, and give our communities a strong voice.

VL Coffin has earned my respect and my vote through his service, compassion, and character. That’s why I’m voting for him on Tuesday, Nov. 3!

Dr. August Murray, Colonel, U.S. Army (Ret.)
Weathersfield
